Celebrating the anniversary of our Democracy's Birth

March 23, 1775 is a date you very likely haven't heard of yet it is instrumental in our democracy's birth. On this day in 1775 that Patrick Henry stood up in the second Virginia Convention with the daring proposition that the colony of Virgina take up arms against the king and fight for independence. As any student of Vote 18 knows, this was an act of high treason. People convicted of treason could be sent back to England and hanged. Because of this the idea of independence was seldom spoke of in public and Patrick Henry was one of the first politicians to do so in the colonies on this day.

The highlight of his historic stand came when he compared King George to Brutus and someone in the House shouted "treason!" to which Henry calmly demurred "if this be treason then make the most of it."

It was also on this day, in this speech, that Patrick Henry made his case and said "I know not what course others may take, but as for me give me liberty or give me death."

And so we were on our way....

(Special thanks to Garrison Keillor's "Writer's Almanac" for getting this day on our collective radar!)
